So this is the big question:
How long do you keep on doing the same thing over and over again before you realise it ain’t working!
Here are two negative examples:
In the first example I stayed in my marriage for 37 years before I finally let go. Obviously, the reasons are complex. Still, 37 years is a very long time.
The other example took place one November about six years ago.
Christmas was just around the corner. Although it had been a hard year and I was exhausted, I still felt I had too much to do so I decided to push on just a little longer. I really should have listened to myself.
I was on my way back from shopping when I tripped and fell flat on my face. My specs broke and I was bruised and battered. I had to be helped up by kind strangers.
That was when I finally realised I had to stop. Sadly, it was too late. I was plunged into burn-out that lasted for five months. When you’re self-employed that was a disaster!
And here’s a positive example that took place this week.
I’d signed up for a 10 week course Ballroom Dancing For Beginners.
I wanted to learn something new, something I would enjoy and give me confidence on the dance floor when I go dancing with Paul, my partner.
Two sessions in and I have had to accept that the severe back pain which followed each session was too high a price to pay so I decided to stop.
This one was easy but it’s not always so clear-cut.
Far too many of us give up before we give something a fair try. So, how long is too long? Or, to put it another way, how long is a piece of string? OK, it’s a cliché but it does make the point!
So how do you know when it’s time to let go? Here’s a question you might like to ask yourself.
Do you feel vital, motivated, inspired, passionate, hopeful or
do you feel exhausted, drained, disappointed?
The longer you stay in the relationship or situation, the harder it will be to finally call it a day but here’s the thing.
Saying no to something means saying yes to something else even if you don’t yet know what that is.
With love and gratitude,
