This morning I came across the quote below:
“We learn something from everyone who passes through our lives. Some lessons are painful, some are painless but all are priceless.” – Unknown
This quote brought back many memories and examples that prove it to be true.
At various times of my life I learned that some ‘friends’ didn’t like it when I changed – when I lost 2 stone in weight, when I decided to leave my marriage, even when I was diagnosed with breast cancer – and lots of other examples in between.
Some so-called friends dumped me by which time I’d already come to the conclusion that they no longer belonged in my life anyway. More, I learned that their decision had nothing to do with me and everything to do with them.
But there was a wonderful upside. New people came into my life, people who were open-hearted, generous, loving and supportive who stayed.
From others I learned what a true friend really is – and isn’t.
I remember once I was doing something that really wasn’t good for me. Then, once I noticed and rectified the situation, this woman said, “I could see what you were doing but I didn’t want to say anything”
I was shocked. “Why not?!”, I asked and she replied, “I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.”
Well, what good is that to me!?!?!?
Again, this wasn’t about me, it was about her.
You won’t be too surprised when I tell you that that friendship fizzled out.
Those experiences were disappointing but hardly devastating.
My fabulous experiences outnumber the disappointing ones by miles!
Friends who put themselves out for me, friends who read or see something they know I’m interested in and send me the link, friends who just listen to me or support me in the most amazing ways because they love me and believe in me.
I’m intensely grateful that the best ones stay in my life rather than pass through it but, either way, good or bad, I’m learning much from everybody, whether they pass through or stay.
What did I learn from the people who come into my life?
I learned what friendship is all about.
With love and gratitude,
